Hardwood Sales

Back in April we worked with the Liverpool based company “Hardwood Sales” to install solar panels on the roof of their newly built warehouse to reduce energy costs.

Hardwood Sales Limited is a specialist hardwood importer, supplying timber for some iconic projects including Churchill’s War Office, the Royal Academy of Music and The Shard. It has used the loan from Lloyds Bank to invest in 1,000 longi PV solar panels, allowing the business to start producing 65% of its own electricity, becoming more energy independent and significantly reducing costs.

The global company, which is headquartered in Liverpool, is based on a nine-acre site with a newly built 100,000 sq ft warehouse plus a manufacturing plant. Five-day work weeks mean that surplus electricity is often generated at weekends, and the business sells this energy back to the grid – helping grow profits further, while contributing to the diversification of the UK’s energy mix and reducing strain on the grid when demand is high.

The solar panels have helped Hardwood Sales futureproof its energy costs, meaning the money that would have been tied up in rising energy prices can now be invested in creating new jobs and upskilling the workforce. The savings made in the business so far have allowed it to commit to the building of an additional manufacturing plant starting September, boosting future growth prospects.

As well as making cost savings, the solar panels also offer Hardwood Sales sustainability benefits in the form of over 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved.

Tony Collins, managing director of Hardwood Sales Ltd, said: “Rising energy costs have been putting pressure on businesses over the last year, and the security that these solar panels have provided us with has been a real relief. Not only have they allowed us to save money on our energy bills, which can be reinvested into the business to help it grow, they’ve also given us a stake in the UK’s ambitions for net zero by 2050.

“Our customers come to us from across the globe, and so it’s important that we show them the work that’s being done within the business to invest in our offering and protect profit margins. The support from Lloyds Bank has put us in a great place to do this.”

Alistair Pike, relationship manager at Lloyds Bank, said: “Hardwood Sales is an excellent example of a business that is invested in its future growth prospects, and knows the importance that making proactive, tangible changes now has for maintaining that growth.

“The business’ latest investment will bring them two-fold benefits, prioritising cost savings while boosting its own green credentials. We’re proud to be by the side of businesses like Hardwood Sales Ltd, and we’re looking forward to supporting them throughout their journey.”

The system consisted of 775 x Longi Solar, LR5-66HIH-500M solar panels with half of the amount of P1100 optimisers as two panels connect to every optimiser. They were wired up to the Solaredge90K manager and two SE100K managers which were placed in an outer building.

80 kWp Solar Panel Installation for Llys Awelon in Ruthin

80 kWp Solar Panel Installation for Llys Awelon in Ruthin

Llys Awelon, Ruthin

A few weeks ago we completed the 80 kWp solar PV system in Ruthin at the newly built care home Llys Awelon. The 160 solar panel system is expected to produce 62 MWh of solar energy every calendar year and help the environment by reducing the amount of CO2 emissions by over 12 tonnes. The power generated by the system will enable the property to power the home in an eco-friendly. This will give the residents to a better and more enjoyable living style as well as help the planet for future generations.

We want to continue in the fight against climate change and help more flats and homes go solar to reduce the amount of carbon footprint being produced and stop people using energy in a non-economic way.

Staveley Mill Yard

Staveley Mill Yard

Staveley Mill Yard

Staveley Mill Yard is a four-acre site comprised of over 20 retail and industrial units, in the centre of Staveley village, it is situated near to both Kendal and Windermere and close to central Lake District. The PV installation will be installed across various buildings and the overall power generated from the 1533 solar panels works out at 574.78 kWp. We will also be installing 9 inverters which will be fitted into a container and 774 P801 optimizers which are connected to the solar panels. There were different designs of SolarEdge inverters installed such as the 27.6K, 82.8K, 25K, 55K and 50K.

It is estimated that this installation will produce about 1,500,000 kilowatt hours a day, but this does depend on how good the weather is. Staveley Mill Yard isn’t just in it for themselves either as there planning to give back to the community and help the rest of the Staveley village by exporting energy back to the grid. They estimate that they only use 1,100,000 kwh of their solar production which leaves them with 400,000 kwh to hand to the village.

The owner of Staveley Mill Yard David Brockbank was asked a few questions about the installation.

How do you feel about the project?

“Excellent, everyone should be doing it. I would like Staveley to be carbon neutral by 2030”

Is there anything else that you would like to say about the PV project?

“The village benefits hugely from the solar energy exported to the village. It would be good if we calculated the village’s carbon footprint and then worked on reducing it. I would be happy to help and share our knowledge and experience”

We are delighted that this project won an award at the Energy Efficiency Awards for being the Regional Large Scale Project of the Year.

The 2021 Regional Large Scale Project of the Year Award rewards one exceptional project, in each of the 11 Regional areas around the UK, where energy efficiency measures of more than £250,000 have been installed.

This award recognises the efforts of all those involved locally in delivering a successful large scale energy saving project, while maintaining excellent customer service that demonstrates a high standard of quality workmanship throughout the project.

Hawarden Castle Ground Mount Solar PV System

Hawarden Castle Ground Mount Solar PV System

Hawarden Castle Ground Mounted System

This 32.40 kWp solar PV system is our biggest ground-mounted system to date consisting of seventy-two Longi Solar, LR4-72HPH-450M solar panels connecting to one P950 optimizer for every 2 solar panels installed. The system was installed at a bit of a distance from the castle so it was wired up underground to avoid any trip hazards above the surface right through to the utility room in the castle where the SolarEdge 25k inverter would be installed on the wall. The system is estimated to produce around 30MWh of energy every year as well helping the environment by lowering their carbon footprint by 6.83 tonnes which is the equivalent to 313 trees being planted

Benefits of a Ground-Mounted Solar PV System

The great thing about ground mounted solar arrays is that they are beneficial to all homeowners. Even if you are an eligible candidate for a rooftop solar panel system, there are many benefits to selecting a ground mounted solar array instead.

Firstly, the ground mounted solar systems are incredibly easy to place. This is due to that fact that they can be placed on open land. No drilling into your roof is required at any stage, and the bracings that are used in these systems are easy to remove as well as lightweight. In the pole mount system, the bracings tend to be a little heavier and more securely installed.

Hawarden Castle

The name Hawarden Castle is probably better known as the grand stately home of W.E. Gladstone, former British Prime Minister, which is not open to the public. However, nestled in the lovely, albeit at times marshy, wooded park associated with Gladstone’s home, the extensive remains of Hawarden “Old” Castle may be explored by entering an unobtrusive stone archway in the town’s center. While not of Welsh origin, Hawarden Castle played a key role in the wars for independence of the 13th century.

Nower days there is a farm shop nearby as there is thousands of acres of field to plant and grow various different fruit and veg and even have a cafe where you can sit and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Bolney Wine Estate, Sussex – PV Installation

Bolney Wine Estate, Sussex – PV Installation

Bolney Wine Estate

Genfit have designed and installed a 59.4kWp solar PV array across two roof spaces, following the construction of a new winery, at Bolney Wine Estate in Sussex.

The system installation was a community funded project by Brighton Energy Cooperative.  The energy generated will be sold to the winery at a lower rate than regular fossil fuel generated power through a PPA (power purchase agreement.

The system benefits from dual module level system monitoring, through Solaredge panel optimisation.  This helps towards providing detailed data and analysis on the PV systems performance through the Solaredge Monitoring Portal.

198 PV modules were installed in total, providing an estimated annual generation of 63.6MWh.

The array is greatly reducing the winery’s usage of energy from fossil fuel, creating a saving of 28.57 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions each year.
